- HighEdWeb Professionals Association

The HighEdWeb conference, which took place October 4-7, 2009, is a gathering created just for higher education web professionals. This conference is the perfect place to mingle with web developers, marketers, designers, writers, managers and all those team members in-between who are exploring the unique web issues facing colleges and universities. It was important for Cascade Experts to take part in this event because the value gained by the exchange of ideas, stories, and experiences within our community is immeasurable. By attending as a participant and not a vendor, it is our goal to translate the information and knowledge gained with these interactions into increased value in our consulting services. Most importantly, it is our daily integration of best practices, well-designed processes, and advancements in modern web practices discovered at events like these that increase the value our clients can obtain by using our consulting team and Cascade Server CMS. This adds to our excitement in attending and what we are able to bring back our clients.

Hannon Hill: “A CMS Experience You Can Trust”
Cascade Experts was very proud and excited to see our friends at Hannon Hill participating as a vendor at the HiEdWeb Conference. Their organization recently hosted a great conference of their own, so putting forth the effort to participate in this event is just another great example of their dedication to the industry and most importantly their clients. It has always been our opinion that the team at Hannon Hill employs some of the most ambitious, intelligent, and hardworking young professionals in the CMS industry today. During our time in Milwaukee, we had the opportunity to discuss many of the exciting features that are being added in Cascade Server. This makes us even more excited about the coming release of Cascade Server 6.4 and we look forward to incorporating these tools soon. We must say, the dedication and effort put forth by the Hannon Hill team shows a continuous commitment to product improvement, development and reaffirms their commitment to provide a positive client experience.

New Friends: Online Communities in Higher Education
Innersync is an interactive studio that understands the importance of social networking and online communities in the higher education arena. In a series of very inspiring developments, Innersync has established that an approach combining progressive internet technologies with compelling design is needed for an organization to build rewarding relationships with their audiences. Innersync accomplishes this by offering a service that supports a profile driven interface similar to what you might find with Facebook, LinkedIn, or Ning. What sets their offering apart from the “freemiums” is an understanding that these communities provide tremendous value and the platform used to tap that value must be owned by the organization in order to effectively define, measure, and tailor the experience for the intented audience. We applaud Innersync for bringing this approach to the college and university setting and are proud to use their products for the management of our own site.

In Conclusion…
Cascade Experts had a great time, learned a wealth of knowledge, and forged new and valuable relationships. In our opinion, it is one of the most valuable web conferences one can attend and we hope to extend our experience gained to the services we provide to you. We would definitely recommend you consider attending this conference in 2010 and many thanks to all those who have helped make Cascade Experts a success.

Voting is an essential part of democracy. It is every American citizen’s fundamental right to be able to voice their opinion and take part in electing public officials. By voting, people take a stand and help decide who represents them and how their government works. Also, citizens not only have rights, but with these rights come responsibilities. Citizenship means participating in the political process by being an informed and active member of society. By taking part in an election and by expressing our point of view, we help our democracy work. By agreeing or disagreeing with our leaders we show that the political system can accept differing points of view and can resolve them. By not voting, we break the connection between the individual and their community. I’m proud to stay that I’m a Georgia Voter!

On Thursday, January 3rd, 2007 at 5:30PM EST my 2000 Lincoln LS aka “The Lincoln” died unexpectedly of a heart attack. The Lincoln was 7 years, 2 months old, with 186,000 miles. It had a full life. The Lincoln had traveled through nearly 20 states and across the country 3 times. Traveled back and forth the midwest and southeast, driven through canyons and up mountains, navigated the streets of Kansas City, Wichita, Dallas, Atlanta and other cities. The Linocln went through snow storms, ice storms, sand storms and flash floods. The Lincoln was a good car and always treated me better than it should have. Now it’s gone, and I’ll always remember my beautiful car and all our many adventures.

It will be sorely missed by both it’s owner, Brock, and friends (anybody that’s ever ridden in it). Although there is a fair possibility that the car will be replaced it can never be replaced in our hearts. Goodbye Lincoln, I will always treasure the memories we had together.

Homegoing Service will begin at 10AM EST on Saturday, January 5th at JunkMyAuto in Covington, GA. In lieu of flowers, please send money towards it’s replacement.

This weekend I had the opportunity to see an stage play at the Atlanta Civic Center which also had an amazing cast. Gossip, Lies & Secrets brings together some of the film, television and music world’s hottest stars on one stage for one unforgettable production. Leading the cadre of characters is one of Hollywood’s most sought after actresses, LisaRaye, who gained critical acclaim as “Diamond” in the hit movie, Players Club and just finished up a four year run on the hit CW show, “All of Us,” and Clifton Powell from the Oscar winning movie, Ray and Next Friday, platinum-selling R&B singer, Blu Cantrell and former Miss USA and actress Kenya Moore. Gossip, Lies & Secrets also features theatre phenomenon Patrice Lovely also known as “Maybelle” from plays such as “When A Woman’s Fed Up” and “Men, Money & Golddiggers.” In addition to her theatrical background, Lovely also became the first female ringmaster in circus history when she led the UniverSoul Circus. The show also features husband and wife play circuit powerhouse and theatre veterans Lia and Tony Grant.

Gossip, Lies & Secrets tells the tale of author Sydney St. Croix, R & B super diva Essence Alexander, and soap opera star Katrina Love. These are three women bonded by an unspoken commitment to be each others confidant and best friend. After a string of bad investments, distracting relationships, and dead end writing jobs, Sydney finds herself at the end of her financial rope and needs to round up her “partners in crime.” Sydney’s solution–call her friends and get together for their ritual “sister girl sessions,” where “no holds barred” secrets are revealed and boundaries are crossed. After an evening of sharing intimate and sometimes incriminating confessions and secrets, the ladies renew their weekly pact to “never tell another soul” about what has occurred. All of that is fine until Sydney gets her big break after being approached by a major publisher who commissions her to write a novel. It is in that moment of sheer desperation that Sydney makes a plot-twisting decision to save her career by breaking the sacred pact of her friends and decide to divulge her best friends’ innermost secrets–all of them.

Providence Canyon State Park offers breathtaking colors of Georgia’s “Little Grand Canyon.” The rare Plumleaf Azalea and other wildflowers, as well as the pink, orange, red and purple hues of the soft canyon soil, make a beautiful natural painting at this unique park. The visitor center explains how the massive gullies (the deepest being 150 feet) were caused by erosion due to poor farming practices in the 1800s.

Florence Marina State Park is situated at the northern end of 45,000-acre Lake Walter F. George, this park offers the perfect setting for those who love water sports. It is adjacent to a natural deep-water marina with an accessible deep-water fishing pier, boat slips and boat ramp. Birders are sure to see herons and egrets, and possibly bald eagles. The park’s Kirbo Interpretive Center teaches visitors about Native Americans, nature and local history, and it displays snakes, turtles, fish and artifacts from the prehistoric Paleo-Indian period through the early 20th century. Ten miles southeast is Providence Canyon State Park, known as Georgia’s Little Grand Canyon.

Amicalola, a Cherokee Indian word meaning “tumbling waters,” is an appropriate name for these 729-foot falls, the tallest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River. An 8.5 mile approach trail leads from the park to Springer Mountain, the southern end of the 2,135-mile Appalachian Trail. However, numerous other trails are available for shorter journeys. A beautiful lodge at the top of the mountain is popular with guests who prefer hotel-type comforts, while a 5-mile hike leads to more remote accommodations at the Len Foote Hike Inn.
